Lochlea has done something a bit different with their "Smoke Without Fire" single malt, and it's quite exciting.
This whisky is a fantastic evolution of their Ploughing Edition, and as the name suggests, it’s all about the smoke without being overpowering. It's a wonderful example of a delicately smoky whisky that still maintains a beautiful balance.
To achieve this, they matured it in a smart combination of ex-peated refill Bourbon barrels and red wine casks.
When you bring the glass to your nose, you'll be greeted by sweet red berries and a mix of floral notes, like cherry blossom. There’s a touch of lemon peel in there too, all wrapped up in a subtle, soft smoke. Taking a sip is a real treat.
The palate is a delightful journey with a hint of salty sea smoke, some fresh-cut oak, and a note of bonfire char. You'll also find some light citrus and a bit of a delicate, fruity sweetness with a slight sherbet tingle.
The finish is lovely and long, with a light char, more soft blossom, and a gentle, fresh phenolic character.
It's a fantastic addition to the core range and is bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered and natural colour.
